What’s the difference between Muay Thai, Thai Boxing and Kick Boxing?
There’s no difference between Thai Boxing and Muay Thai. Muay Thai, sometimes written as one word, is the Thai for Thai Boxing. For a fuller description see What is Thai Boxing? Kick boxing is relatively new and was originally derived from Karate. At first it was known as Full Contact Karate. The rules are different, there’s no clinch work involving knees and elbows and the techniques are derived from Karate.
How safe/dangerous is it?
It’s a contact sport so you must expect the odd bang or bruise. If you feel you can’t take that then please don’t come. Having said that, we’ve only had four injuries, or thereabouts, in twelve years and they have been things like torn ligaments and stretched muscles, usually when students have not warmed up properly. If you go into tournaments however the risk increases.
Can I go in for tournaments?
Yes, if you train hard and regularly and you reach a good enough standard. The first thing you will go in for will be a semi-contact event and we’ll take it from there depending on how well you do. There is no pressure for anyone to fight.
Do I need any equipment or uniform?
Not to start with. A t shirt and shorts or bottoms is all you need. We train barefoot. We supply gloves for beginners to use If you wish to purchase equipment we can supply good value brands. Students, for their own safety, should purchase a groin guard
